Barbara's Surprise is the first romance that Jude ever wrote. It cannot be called a novella, since it's under 10,000 words. The story was inspired after Jude read her first romance novel. She was barely a teenager when she wrote the first draft of this story. She updated it a few years later, which started a natural trend of modernizing stories as time went by. Not wanting to spoil the integrity of the story, which allows her readers a glimpse of how she wrote so long ago, Jude has not edited this story. It is offered to Resident (see Group Levels) members of her forum.

The transition of the story is quite humorous. The main storyline was Barbara's parents want to give her a big gift. The original gift was a new pool in their backyard, so they send her to her grandparents' for a month. While there, she meets and falls in love with a local boy. They must part, when she returns home. She is overjoyed by the pool but saddened that she is separated from her love.

As Jude aged, this story aged with her. The pool was upgraded to a new surprise, something more befitting a Junior in high school. Of course, the story is juvenile. It would have to be, but that is the charm of it! Anyone who reads and enjoys Jude's current works would certainly enjoy seeing how her writing has evolved over the decades.
